Volunteer at The High Backs in Burnhill, Rutherglen

The High Backs wouldn't exist without its volunteers. From the very beginning, before we became a registered charity, local Burnhill people came up the lane with their own tools to pull out debris, weld fences back together, and clear years of fly-tipping - this place has been built by people who showed up and gave their time.

That hasn't changed.

What is volunteering?

Volunteering just means giving some of your time to something you care about.

✦ It might be a few hours a month helping in the garden.

✦ It might be a skill you have - building, growing, organising, communicating - that you'd like to put to good use.

✦ It might be turning up when you can and asking what needs doing.

If you've ever fixed something, grown something, helped someone, or just been good company - you've got what it takes.

What people find when they volunteer here

What people tend to find is that they get back more than they put in. We've seen people find real purpose here who weren't expecting to. People who've said the High Backs gave them a reason to get out. People who grew up in this community and came back wanting to give something to it. A young person who started out on a litter pick is now a member of staff. That's what this place does - and volunteers are at the heart of it.

Three ways to get involved

We welcome people from Burnhill and the wider area - we’ve had volunteers from Castlemilk, Toryglen, Cambuslang, and all across Rutherglen.

1

Lead Volunteer

Lead Volunteers take ownership of a defined area  - whether that's the garden, communications, or supporting  volunteers. It's a role with real responsibility and impact. You'll work with the team, bring your own initiative, and help shape where we go next. No formal qualifications needed - just commitment and enthusiasm. Travel expenses covered, and there's always tea, coffee, and biscuits.

2

Volunteer

Want to help but not looking to take on a lead role? That's absolutely fine. As a volunteer, you come along, get shown what needs doing, and get stuck in alongside the team. Your time matters just as much. Travel expenses covered - and yes, still tea, coffee, and biscuits.

3

Just come down

Fancy a look around? Come and see us. Have a wander, meet the team, and see what feels right. This is how a lot of our volunteers have found their way in - and it's always a welcome way to start. Drop us a message first so we can find a good time.
