High impact volunteer roles
at The High Backs

We're always looking for motivated people to take on meaningful volunteer roles at The High Backs charity in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire. The roles below are what we're looking for right now - check back regularly as new opportunities come up as the garden and community space grows.

You can get in touch through our contact form or send us a message on Facebook. Just let us know what role you are interested in. We can send you the role description or we can go ahead and arrange an informal chat on site.

Current roles

Below are our current lead volunteer roles. If there are no suitable current roles listed, we still want to hear from you.

Even when we don't have specific roles available, we always welcome volunteers - people who can come along and lend a hand with whatever needs doing. Get in touch and we'll find something for you.

Garden Lead (position filled)

Take real ownership of the High Backs community garden and growing space - seasonal planting, composting, welcoming growers, and helping the garden thrive. No formal qualifications needed, just a love of horticulture or growing things and the enthusiasm to make it brilliant.

Position now filled - however our new lead gardener would love a team of fellow gardening enthusiasts to join them. Get in touch if you’re happy to work together on their plans.

Communications Lead

Help tell the story of the High Backs - managing social media and communications, writing content and updates, and making sure the community knows what's happening. Great for someone who loves words and creativity looking to build experience in communications, content creation, or community engagement.

Volunteer Coordinator

Help welcome and coordinate volunteers at the High Backs - matching people to roles, keeping things organised, and making sure everyone feels at home. Whether you're looking to build experience in volunteer coordination and people management, or you have a truckload of organisational experience to share - this role is for you.

Events Logistics Volunteer

Events and groups don't run themselves - and behind every great day at The High Backs is someone making sure everything's in place. Our Events Logistics Volunteer provides practical, hands-on support across our regular groups and bigger community events: setting up, welcoming people, keeping things running smoothly, and clearing away at the end. If you're reliable, practical, and want to become a real part of what makes this place tick, we'd love to hear from you. A great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in events coordination and community work - or for someone with loads of organisational experience who wants to put it to brilliant use.
