Growing together in Burnhill

The High Backs is a registered Scottish charity and community hub in Burnhill, Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire - on the doorstep of Glasgow. We're a community garden - but also a place where youth activists make real change, where men come to talk, where families gather, and where neighbours share food, skills, and good company.

From growing sessions to a knitting circle, a community larder to events that bring the whole neighbourhood together. Whatever brings you here, you're welcome.

So don’t stop at the front gate!

Hard work and vision has transformed the previously derelict site at The High Backs into a valued community resource - timber sheds used as community spaces, a coffee hut, a stage, and community gardens.

Give your time to the High Backs

There are lots of ways to get involved - from leading a project to just turning up and lending a hand.

A volunteer applies a temporary glitter tattoo to a young girl at the High Backs Easter event in Burnhill, Rutherglen. Stencils and a colourful case of glitter are spread across the table on the main hall decking, with other visitors visible in the background.
